Damascus: According to Raaz News I Security expert Abdullah Al-Asaad described the defense cooperation agreement between Syria and Saudi Arabia as politically significant, arguing that it reflects Syria’s return to the Arab fold and a gradual distancing from Iranian influence.

However, Al-Asaad stressed that the agreement does not necessarily imply the unification of the two countries’ military doctrines or strategic objectives. He noted that such agreements are common between friendly armed forces and may include intelligence sharing, the exchange of military expertise, educational missions, training programs, and the professional development of military commanders.

He added that this type of military cooperation can take place between countries with different military doctrines, whether Eastern or Western, and should therefore be viewed within the framework of conventional defense cooperation, according to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

Meanwhile, political researcher Anas Al-Khatib described the agreement as part of a broader transition in Syrian-Saudi relations, from a phase characterized by support to one based on institutional partnership.

Al-Khatib said the agreement could serve as an entry point for broader cooperation between the two countries, while emphasizing that it does not necessarily mean Syria will join the so-called “Mecca Alliance.”
