Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held a series of high-level meetings with senior economic officials from the United States, China and Thailand on the sidelines of the 2026 World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok, focusing on financial cooperation, economic stability, investment opportunities and the expansion of bilateral trade.

The meetings reflected Islamabad’s efforts to strengthen international economic partnerships, diversify financing sources, improve access to global capital markets and promote broader regional economic cooperation.

Pakistan, US Discuss Economic Reforms and Financing Strategy

During a meeting with Erin Browne, US Treasury Under Secretary, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb discussed Pakistan’s economic outlook, ongoing reforms and external financing requirements.

Aurangzeb highlighted Pakistan’s plan to issue a $3 billion Eurobond in September and outlined the government’s strategy to diversify financing through Sukuk, Panda bonds and other financial instruments.

The discussions also covered the impact of regional conflicts on energy markets, inflation and food security. Both sides exchanged views on measures to ensure uninterrupted supplies and prepare for increased energy demand during the winter season.

The finance minister emphasized the importance of export-led growth, stronger information technology exports, improved competitiveness of Pakistani goods and sustainable debt management. He noted that these priorities were important to strengthening the country’s sovereign credit profile and supporting progress toward a BB sovereign credit rating.

Privatization, airport outsourcing, engagement with Boeing and potential financing from the US Export-Import Bank were also discussed. Aurangzeb expressed appreciation for continued US support and underscored the importance of sustained economic cooperation between the two countries.

Pakistan and China Reaffirm Commitment to Financial Cooperation

In a separate meeting, Aurangzeb met with Chinese Finance Minister Lan Fo’an to discuss deeper financial cooperation, expanded access to international capital markets and opportunities to advance regional economic collaboration.

The Pakistani finance minister briefed his Chinese counterpart on the country’s progress toward macroeconomic stability and expressed gratitude for China’s longstanding support, particularly during challenging economic circumstances.

Lan Fo’an welcomed Pakistan’s improving economic position and its renewed access to global financial markets.

The meeting highlighted the importance of continued economic coordination between Islamabad and Beijing, with both sides discussing avenues for strengthening financial engagement, encouraging investment and expanding cooperation in support of regional economic development.

Pakistan and Thailand Seek to Expand Trade and Tourism

Aurangzeb also met with Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, to explore ways to strengthen bilateral relations and broaden economic cooperation.

The discussions focused on increasing bilateral trade, deepening cultural ties and promoting tourism between the two countries. Both sides also exchanged views on resuming high-level exchanges, including potential engagements at the prime ministerial level.

The talks underscored the shared interest of Pakistan and Thailand in expanding economic links and making greater use of opportunities in trade, tourism and diplomatic engagement.
